Coral Reefs: Fishing for Sustainability
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sustainable fisheries must ultimately reduce poverty while maintaining ecosystem productivity. On coral reefs, managing for 'concave' trophic pyramids might be a win-win for people and ecosystems, by providing higher-value fisheries and maintaining important ecological functions.

Derelict Fishing Line Provides a Useful Proxy for Estimating Levels of Non-Compliance with No-Take Marine Reserves
No-take marine reserves (NTMRs) are increasingly being established to conserve or restore biodiversity and to enhance the sustainability of fisheries. Although effectively designed and protected NTMR networks can yield conservation and fishery benefits, reserve effects often fail to manifest in systems where there are high levels of non-compliance by fishers (poaching). Obtaining reliable estim...
متن کاملCommunity structure and coral status across reef fishing intensity gradients in Palk Bay reef, southeast coast of India.
Coral reef fishes are exploited without the knowledge of their sustainability and their possible effect in altering the community structure of a coral reef ecosystem. Alteration of the community structure could cause a decline in the health of coral reefs and its services. We documented the coral community structure, status of live corals and reef fish assemblages in Palk Bay at the reef fishin...
متن کاملA model-based approach to determine the long-term effects of multiple interacting stressors on coral reefs.
The interaction between multiple stressors on Caribbean coral reefs, namely, fishing effort and hurricane impacts, is a key element in the future sustainability of reefs. We develop an analytic model of coral-algal interactions and explicitly consider grazing by herbivorous reef fish. Further, we consider changes in structural complexity, or rugosity, in addition to the direct impacts of hurric...
متن کاملFish Biomass Structure at Pristine Coral Reefs and Degradation by Fishing
Coral reefs around the world have experienced a dramatic decline during the past 25 years. Overfishing is believed to play a major role. There is significant interest in stabilizing and restoring damaged reefs, and first steps include understanding the functioning of reefs in their natural state and examining the effects of fishing. The isolated Kingman and Palmyra reefs are believed to provide...

is it that is not poison? All things are poison and nothing is without poison. It is the dose only that makes a thing not a poison. Coral reefs, already one of the most delicate marine systems, are threatened by a host of pressures, including sea temperature increases , pollution, development, fishing, and tourism. Last March, the U.S. government unveiled an ambitious plan that addresses the mo...
